LUME, a restaurant run by Michelin-starred Chef Luigi Taglienti, opened in Milan.
On June 16th the LUME restaurant opened its doors in Milan. Situated in an industrial setting inside the former Richard Ginori factory, the restaurant is located at 37 Via Giacomo Watt, in the Naviglio Grande area.
LUME forms part of W37, the exclusive, multi-purpose building that brings together apartments, offices and event spaces. The whole complex is managed by MB America, that planned and realised the project with a holistic vision: from the renovation and requalification of the building to the business, operations and development plan to the creation of the brand.
The idea for LUME came from Emanuela Verlicchi Marazzi, entrepreneur and President of the Filippo Marazzi Foundation, who has always invested in initiatives that support young, up-and-coming talents.
LUME’s Chef is the Michelin-starred Luigi Taglienti, who arrives at the restaurant on the back of significant experiences both in Italy and further afield. “I begin with myself – affirms the Chef Taglienti – the cuisine has a solid base anchored in technique, experience and my professional story. A very understandable cuisine, that could also speak to a foreign clientele who is used to restaurants of a high standard but that at the same time searches for the traditions of Italian cuisine.” LUME serves innovative cuisine that harmoniously and skilfully combines experience of classic and contemporary cooking, with strong ties to the local area and a constant search for raw ingredients.
There are three menus available: an à la carte menu, which changes every season, and two tasting menus. Of these, one is more traditional with a Milanese favour, the other one is more unusual and experimental. Consistent with the choice of continuity in respect to previous work, the menu has numerous innovative plates but also some ‘classic’ representative dishes of the Chef. The wine list ranges from major labels to small producers, based on extensive research linked to the territories, with the intention of offering a wide and sophisticated choice.
The restaurant was designed by Architect Monica Melotti, who worked both on the renovation and the interior design. The kitchen, a central part of the space, has the appearance of a glass cube covered with embroidered decoration that produces a captivating play of volumes. “The inspiration came from embroidery patterns; I like the idea of taking a detail tied to memory and bringing it up to date. In general, this is the vision of the W37 project: it aims to maintain a balance between historical heritage and contemporary design” said Monica Melotti, Chief Design Officer at MB America, who has recently overseen the entire renovation project of 93 Palm in Miami, Al Capone’s former home.
The restaurant, which seats 40 guests, is spread over two rooms. One of the rooms contains an area that can be turned into a private room for approximately twelve guests.
Light takes centre stage thanks to the large windows that face onto the inner courtyard and the white and warm colours that dominate the space. This is the inspiration for its name, LUME, a timeless word that evokes an intimate atmosphere and a pleasing environment.
From booking to welcoming guests, service is taken extremely seriously, down to the smallest details. The aim is to ensure guests enjoy an all-encompassing, complete experience, based on a wide range of activities that go beyond the high quality of the food on offer. These include a concierge available to meet clients’ requests, the option of booking a private transfer to/from the restaurant and a valet parking service. As there are also apartments in W37, on request, it is possible to stay overnight in the building.
Marco Bruzzi, founder and Chief Executive Officer at MB America, said: “The design for LUME, the restaurant located inside W37, stems from MB America’s constant commitment to look beyond real estate and provide a full range of services. Indeed, our aim is to satisfy the needs of guests at the properties we manage and to meet the expectations of our customers, providing them with exceptional value.”
